Crafting Skill Magazines are newly added items in Alpha 21 as a part of the new Learn by Reading crafting skill system. Now a certain amount of magazines must be obtained & read to unlock most crafting recipes. This excludes Modifications which are unlocked through Schematics as well as the unique Can of Sham & Super Corn Seed recipes or specific items which are unlocked through Perk Books.

They are divided in 23 categories related to each type of crafting and can be obtained as quest rewards via Crafting Skill Magazine Bundles (dropping 2 magazines of 3 types), bought from the Trader or looted in mailboxes, newspaper boxes, bookshelves and bookstores (much like Perk Books). Some magazines, for example 'Home Cooking Weekly' (Food skill), are also found in the loot places typically associated with their respective items (e.g. food piles & cabinets).

Unlike Perk Books there are no differences between magazines of the same type. New crafting recipes will be unlocked after a certain amount of magazines of the same type have been consumed. The drop chance for specific magazines increases when putting perk points into related skills (For example 'Master Chef' under the Strength Attribute will increase the 'Home Cooking Weekly' drop chance).

Magazine Series

Below is an overview of all Magazine types and the amount needed to reach the maximum level in that crafting type category. Leveling up the related Skills increases the drop chance for the associated Magazine.

Notes

• The most effective way to gather 'Forge Ahead' magazines is to level the Lock Picking skill as that ONLY increases the chance to find additional 'Forge Ahead' magazines as opposed to Advanced Engineering, which increases loot chance for 4 types.
• Each increasing level of an associated skill increases the chance of a found magazine being of the related type by 200% per level (up to 1000%), but it does NOT increase the chance of actually finding a magazine.
• Since each skill level adds a percentage to finding certain magazines, levelling both related skills doubles the chance of finding that type (applicable to 'Tech Planet', 'Armored Up' & 'Forge Ahead').
