Death occurs in 7 Days to Die when your character's Health reaches zero.
Effects of Death[]
There are several consequences of Death:
- Your character may potentially drop items, depending on server settings.
- You will be given a selection of locations for respawning.
- Your character will respawn with 90% Health, Food, and Water. All negative buffs will have been removed.
- An experience debt is incurred unless you were protected by Death XP Penalty Protection. The XP bar will fill 25% red indicating the experience debt to be paid down. This debt is cumulative and will stack with previously existing experience debt.
- If you are level 6 or higher, you will receive a Status Effect called Near Death Trauma that will grant you some protection until you've paid your experience debt.
Dropping Items on Death[]
Upon death, your character will drop certain items depending on the "Drop On Death" Game Settings:
- Nothing - retain all your worn items, Toolbelt items, and backpack Inventory.
- Everything - drop all items including worn items, Toolbelt items, and backpack Inventory.
- Toolbelt only - drop all items located on your Toolbelt.
- Backpack only - drop all items located in your backpack Inventory.
- Delete All - deletes all items worn or carried.
If any items were dropped on death, a Backpack will be placed on the spot where your character died. A blue backpack marker will be visible on the Map and game compass. The backpack will stay around for 3600 seconds (one hour) before disappearing.
Respawning[]
After a short delay after dying, a respawn screen will appear, giving you various options:
- "Respawn Now" to a random location in the world, if there was no active Bed and no items were dropped.
- "Spawn on my bed" - option is available if an active Bed was placed.
- "Spawn near my bed" - option is available if an active Bed was placed.
- "Spawn near my backpack" - option is available if any items were dropped on character death.

- Prompt that appears while respawning, if you had
an active Bed and no items were dropped on death.
