The zombie does massive amounts of damage. It can be blown up by shooting the flashing green spot on the C4, which is strapped on the zombie's torso. The explosion is very destructive.
The damage dealt by the zombie itself is a standard 20 to entities, but a massive 500 to blocks. Contrast this the explosion which deals 800 to entities and 5000 to blocks.
In addition it appears to have a very high PhysicalDamageResist of 60% which will greatly reduce damage taken by guns and melee.
