Oil Shale can only be found by mining in the desert biome. It has a purple hue and is somewhat shiny (visible only on higher graphic settings) with a brushed appearance (see images below). It is found by digging down at about 20 blocks, where the stone layer begins. It is in the stone layer under the desert just like other ores. It can also very commonly be found in the caves in the desert and usually in extremely large quantities so make sure that if you are mining it that you have plenty of free inventory space. Each time you successfully mine a shale you receive 100 shales compared to the usual 40 of each other mineral. Cooking shale on the campfire is one of the easiest ways to get your science skill up.
