The Silencer Mod is a barrel mod that reduces the noise a gun makes when firing but also reduces damage and range.

In-Game Description[]

A sound suppressor greatly reduces the firing sound but reduces maximum range and damage.
Works best with small calibers and guns with a low rate of fire.

Compatibility[]

Combat[]

The Silencer Mod is best used in stealth builds, namely with the perks Hidden Strike and From The Shadows as they offset the damage loss if the player has not yet completed the Urban Combat perk book series. Because the aforementioned perks are governed by Agility, the best weapons to use the Silencer on are pistols, namely the Desert Vulture.

While the Silencer can be used on the SMG-5 or Pistol, it is better to use it on the Magnum or Desert Vulture due to their high base damage. Due to the larger health pools Ferals and Radiated Zombies have, the SMG-5 and Pistol will be unable to take out these mid- and late-stage enemies in a single shot, especially on higher difficulty settings. It will also be more cost-efficient in terms of the resources used. E.g. if a Feral can be dispatched with a single regular .44 Magnum Bullet as opposed to 3-4 9mm bullets, the player will have saved on 1-2 gunpowder and 2-3 lead and brass.

Although players can use the Silencer on other guns, they would have to spend extra perk points to level the associated weapon perk to offset the damage loss. Additionally, while the Silencer can be put on shotguns, it is rather futile to do so due to the base amount of noise they generate and the mod would have a meager effect on their noise reduction. Furthermore, while it can be used on rifles, the reduction in effective range may make it unappealing to use once one finds out they can't hit a long range target because of the debuff.

Notes[]

  • Range reduction effectively translates to the range at which the gun's hitscan can hit. E.g. a Sniper Rifle can hit a target 80 blocks away from the player, but with this mod attached, the Sniper Rifle can only hit a target 60 blocks away.
    • Shotgun shells are the deciding factor of the max and effective range with which you can hit a target rather than the gun. This means that all shotguns using the regular Shotgun Shell will have a max range of 7.5 and effective range of 3.2 with the Silencer mod attached.
